Dental Fillings

A cavity does not have to mean a visible, dark filling. Tooth-colored fillings repair decay while blending naturally into your smile. We use composite resin fillings that restore your tooth without drawing attention to the treatment.

A Natural-Looking Way to Repair Cavities

Restoring your tooth without changing how your smile looks.

A dental filling repairs a tooth after decay has been removed, filling the space left behind so the tooth can function normally again. We start by cleaning out the decayed portion of the tooth, then fill it with a tooth-colored composite resin that is shaped directly onto the tooth and hardened with a curing light. Because the material is soft and workable at first, we can shape it precisely to match the natural contours of your tooth.

Fillings are typically completed in a single visit, with the entire process, from removing the decay to polishing the finished filling, taking well under an hour in most cases. Once it’s set, a filling restores your tooth’s strength and lets you eat, chew, and clean the area normally again.

When is a Filling Necessary?

It is not always obvious when a tooth needs a filling, especially in the early stages of decay, but there are some common signs worth watching for that may mean it’s time for an exam. These signs include the following:

A Cavity Has Formed

A cavity is the most common reason for a filling, and catching it early usually means a simpler, smaller repair.

A Tooth Feels Sensitive

Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods can be an early sign of decay that a filling can address.

A Tooth Has a Small Crack

A filling can repair minor chips or cracks before they have a chance to worsen or affect the rest of the tooth.

Caring for Your Filling After Treatment

Once your filling is in place, there is very little you need to do differently. You can eat and drink normally once any numbness wears off, though it is a good idea to avoid very hard or sticky foods on that tooth for the first day. Mild sensitivity to hot or cold is common for a short time afterward and typically fades on its own.
