A missing tooth can change more than your smile. It can make chewing and speaking harder, and over time, the surrounding teeth may begin to shift into the empty space. A dental bridge fills that gap with a fixed replacement, restoring both function and appearance.
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that fills the gap left by one or more missing teeth. Rather than sitting loose in your mouth like a removable option, a bridge is anchored to the natural teeth on either side of the gap, called abutment teeth, and holds a replacement tooth firmly in place between them. Because it’s fixed rather than removable, a bridge functions much like your natural teeth when you eat and speak, and it’s only removed by a dentist.
Bridges are typically made from porcelain, metal alloys, or a combination of both, and are custom-shaded to blend in with the rest of your smile. Beyond restoring your appearance, a bridge also helps keep your bite balanced and prevents nearby teeth from shifting into the space left by a missing tooth.
A bridge uses the teeth on either side of the gap as anchors, called abutment teeth. We prepare those teeth and take an impression, then a custom-made bridge is crafted to fit precisely between them, replacing the missing tooth or teeth with a natural-looking replacement that stays in place.
A bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth, letting you chew and speak normally again. Without it, nearby teeth can shift out of place and change how your bite fits together.
Bridges are custom-shaded and shaped to blend in with your surrounding teeth. Most people won’t be able to tell the difference between your bridge and your natural smile.
A well-fitted bridge can last for many years with regular care and cleanings. Since it’s fixed in place, you won’t need to take it out or soak it like a removable option.
It’s easy to put off replacing a missing tooth, especially if it isn’t causing pain. But leaving the gap unaddressed can create problems that grow over time. Nearby teeth can gradually shift into the empty space, changing your bite and making it harder to clean between your teeth. The jawbone in that area can also begin to lose density without a tooth root or a properly supported bridge in place.
The longer a gap goes untreated, the more it can affect your other teeth and your overall bite alignment. Replacing a missing tooth sooner rather than later often means a simpler treatment and a more stable, comfortable result.
Preparing the abutment teeth involves light shaping, and we can discuss options to keep you comfortable throughout the process. Most patients experience only mild sensitivity afterward.
A well-fitted bridge can last many years, often a decade or more, with regular cleanings and check-ups to keep it and the surrounding teeth healthy.
No. A bridge is anchored to the natural teeth next to the gap, while an implant is placed directly into the jawbone. We can help you understand which option may be a better fit for your situation.
Many dental insurance plans include some coverage for bridges. We accept a wide range of PPO plans and can help you understand your specific coverage before treatment.
Brushing twice a day, cleaning under the bridge with floss threaders or a water flosser, and keeping up with regular dental visits will help your bridge last as long as possible.
Restoring a smile takes more than technical skill, it takes knowing what a patient actually needs, which is something Dr. Tina Panchal has focused on since opening her Edison practice in 2015. Her father spent over three decades as a local orthodontist, and that same reputation for dependable, straightforward care carries into every bridge she fits.
